Join the joint Risk Management Member Development Groups call on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 as we discuss:

Acquiring Environmentally Distressed Assets – One Firm’s Business Model is Another Firm’s Exit Strategy

This call will be a little different; there will be open/interactive discussion in the latter part of the presentation.  Firms like Phoenix IF are both a true exit strategy for lenders (because they take title), and client prospect for Affiliates (because they are an equity source for deals declined by banks due to impact or stigma-attachment).

Session Summary:

  • Overview of the Phoenix Investment Funds and Winefield & Associates strategy to buy environmentally distressed notes and take title to these non-performing assets
  • Case studies
  • Open discussion:  Minimizing environmental liabiliy – statutory lender liability protections, environmental insurance policies, and rigorous due diligence

Presenters:

  • Matt Beck is the President and co-founder of Phoenix Investment Funds. Matt B. is responsible Phoenix’s national acquisition platform, client relations, strategy, and business development, and he serves on the firm’s Management and Executive Committees.  He has been acquiring distressed notes and environmentally challenged properties for over 20 years, having learned the nuances from his father (also a banker).  Matt B. studied business marketing at Arizona State University.
  • Matt Winefield is the President of Winefield & Associates, Inc.  Matt W. began his career as an environmental engineer for Chevron, and later formed then sold an environmental consultancy.  Although he enjoyed his consulting career, Matt W. is strictly a real estate investor these days, and he uses his technical wherewithal to oversee environmental due diligence for his personal and Phoenix’s IF portfolios.  Matt has a couple engineering degrees and obtained his MBA from UCLA.

The call will be hosted by EBA-RMC Co-Chairs: Michael Cole of SunTrust Bank, and Dennis Firestone of ATC Group Services.

Get involved with the EBA E&E Media Club!

EBA E&E Media Club - What is it?  Our new Education and Entertaining (E&E) Media Club is an EBA member-driven media forum that focuses on education and entertainment.

There are so many great books and other media sources that explain why we have jobs. We invite you to make suggestions on resources for how to be better professionals / humans, or give life lessons, or just plain make you laugh.  We plan on doing bi-monthly reviews of books, movies and webcasts, which may be related to the environmental business we work in, the history of our practices, business growth, or just because you should.  Participation is voluntary.  We will try to ensure books are available in multiple formats (such as audio books), but you will be responsible to obtain the media.

As we launch this, we plan for bi-monthly updates, and will communicate in advance which book or movie / webcast we are reviewing.  We will be using the EBA Risk Management Member Development Group Blog to disseminate information.  Any book worms or movie critics who are interesting in assisting with reviews or ideas on books/movies/etc. please contact Jeffrey Sotek at 518-344-9853 or jeff.sotek@amecfw.com.  There is no obligation for members to read, listen or watch anything, but it may be fun, and we hope you'll join us.
