EBA Gives Back Santa Fe, NM

EBA members have two options to participate in the EBA Gives Back program. Join us in the main lobby about 9 AM to form teams to either go to the Historic Santa Fe Foundation or The Wildlife Center. The two options are very different and should appeal to large group of volunteers. We will also meet at 1 PM in the lobby to accommodate EBA Members who arrive later in the day.
Let Holly Neber of AEI (hneber@aeiconsultants.com) know of your interest and arrival time.

The Historic Santa Fe Foundation is located in an interesting old building, with a fireplace they will fire-up for us. It is a great place to start our exploration of Santa Fe, by getting a feel for the history of the city. They can accommodate 10-12 people at a large table with several copies of old maps.We will use old maps and compare them to Google Maps to find buildings 100+ years old. They have two laptops we can use and we can also bring our own and log into their system for internet access. It sounds like we would probably flag the 100+ year old buildings by noting them on Google “My Maps.”They would use the information to have some type of educational display during the city’s anniversary. Although a building outline on an old map may not match up with current building outlines (additions may have been constructed) or it could be a completely new building with a similar outline to an old building, our contact said she is not concerned about that because very few building demolitions occur in Santa Fe and if we find an old building with an addition, we can annotate a copy of the old map to show the current building outline. If you have questions or would like to participate, please contact Jeri Massengillof Historical Information Gatherers, Inc at jerim@historicalinfo.com.

Volunteer at The Wildlife Center, about 20 minutes from SantaFe.The Wildlife Center works to conserve and restore native wildlife and their habitats through action-oriented education, promotion of publicawareness, strategic partnerships and responsible wildlife rehabilitation. They have a variety of raptors and mammals at their facility. Volunteeractivities include building enclosures for wildlife including bear/mountainlion enclosures, and we could also design an educational kiosk. The Center and contains a wildlife hospital and rehabilitation facility as well as educational space for schools and other groups and a “Wild Walk” exhibiting over 30 animals that could not be released into the wild. They wouldgive us a tour and let us meet some of the educational animals that livepermanently at the center. They have 27 bears protected onsite due to recent fires inthe vicinity. We will need those EBA members with rental cars to make the 20 minute drive to the Center. Check out their website at http://www.thewildlifecenter.org/ If you have questions or would like to participate, please contact Erin Kane of Accutest Laboratories at erink@accutest.com.
